South Point High School is an outstanding public high school in Belmont, N.C. It has been accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools since 1974.

The school’s history began in 1962, when ����app County Schools purchased 27 acres of land for a new high school. In 1963, the first plans were designed for a two-wing facility. In September of 1964, 748 students and 30 teachers returned to “Belmont High School” in its new location; the cafeteria was completed in November.

The new school brought new opportunities for the students, such as mechanical drawing, art, chorus, school yearbook/ newspaper, and distributive education. In 1969, Cramerton High School and Reid High School consolidated with Belmont High School, and the school was re-named as South Point High School. Enrollment increased to 900 students.

In 1997, ����app County Schools transitioned from junior high schools to middle schools, and the ninth graders added to South Point increased enrollment to 1,100 students. New additions were made to the school in 1995 and 1999. The latest improvements have been new stadium ticket booths, additional fencing, updates to Lineberger Stadium, and two new computer labs. Today the campus measures 156,485 square feet on 33.7 acres.

The school day runs from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and operates on a four-period block schedule, with third period extended for four lunch sessions. A cafeteria staff of 13 provides hot and cold breakfast and lunch each day.

The two 18-week semesters of the school year total 180 days of instruction. ����app County Schools provides seven buses that transport students to and from South Point’s school hub. Nearly 600 students are transported out of this hub, including 250 South Point students.

South Point is continually striving to ensure a safe learning environment for its students and faculty. A Safe School Plan is in place and includes the following procedures: bomb threats, tornado and fire evacuations, lockdowns, sweep team, and first responders. Staff and faculty training is held several times each year for safety and violence prevention.

South Point’s faculty consists of 68 instructional teachers, four administrators (one principal and three assistants), and support personnel including bus drivers, cafeteria workers, a career development coordinator, custodians, guidance counselors, a media specialist, a school nurse, office assistants, security personnel, a social worker, and teacher assistants. Seventy-five percent of administration personnel and 53 percent of the instructional staff have 10 or more years of experience in education; 37 percent of the instructional personnel have advanced degrees.

Faculty and staff are very involved with the operation of South Point. Each department is represented by a department chair. Faculty and staff serve on numerous committees and provide supervision for after-school events on and off campus. South Point offers many extracurricular activities to its students, in addition to 28 sports on both the junior varsity or varsity levels. We also have an award-winning band, chorus and drama program as well as a yearbook class that consistently wins top state and national honors.

BELMONT COMMUNITY

The total enrollment of South Point High School is approximately 1,100 students. The feeder schools from which South Point enrolls its students are Belmont Middle, Cramerton Middle, and Mt. Holly Middle. The community’s steady population growth is reflected in the increase of students each year. The 2013 opening of Stuart W. Cramer High School pulled approximately 200 students out of the South Point district.

Belmont traces its heritage to the early 1870’s when the Southern Railway built its first track through the area. A watering stop along the line was named “Garibaldi” after John Garibaldi, who built a water pump tower at the location in 1871. The train stop came to be known as Garibaldi Station or “Baldy” until 1886, when the name was changed to Belmont upon the recommendation of Bishop Leo Haid of the nearby Benedictine Monastery.
